What is mahjong anyway?
Mahjong is a tile game of sequences that originated from China. Mahjong can also be spelled mah jongg or simply called mahj. There have been many variations of the name, but mahjong is original and the most universal.

The goal in Chinese mahjong, which varies slightly in different in regions of China, is to complete sequences of pairs, chows, kongs and pung and keep score. All other variations of mahjong are a version of the Chinese mahjong game.
American mahjong, which is the most common version played in the United States, requires a player to match a sequence on identical cards used by all players at the table. American mahjong has jokers, the Charleston, racks and limits those sequences to win of those on the card.
All mahjong games are complex. American mahjong is more difficult to win, whereas Chinese mahjong is more of a gambling game with easier sequences.
How do I learn to play mahjong?
American mahjong is best learned with a trained teacher. Many people know how to play, but it is important to find a mahjong teacher. Just because someone knows how to read, doesn’t mean they know how to teach a beginner phonics. It is similar in mahjong.
Lessons will include introducing the suits, introducing the card and practicing the Charleston before play begins. Some teachers can teach the beginning stages in one lesson, and some may teach lessons over three or four sessions.
Online play is one of the most important ways to practice. In 2025, online game play is the fastest way to learn the game and the sequences.
How do I join a group?
American mahjong is growing very fast. Many local libraries, country clubs and religious community centers offer mahjong open play. You may need to sign up to be party of a regular group or operate on a drop in basis.
In Nashville, Chicago and Lake Geneva, mahjong social clubs offer guided play. Most of these events are free and are played at different locations. The sets and cards are provided. At mahjong social clubs, you can try new tiles, sit with new players and use an alternative card to the NMJL. All experience levels are welcome!

What are the benefits of mahjong?
Mahjong has been shown to help keep the brain sharp as we age. Most importantly, mahjong gets women off their phones and engaged in real connections.
Everyone needs to challenge their brain, form new friendships and unplug. I bet there are even more reasons to play, but I am in it mostly for the connection.
See you at the table!
